From Source To Cup: Expedition Joe Coffee Roast Profiles Explained - Sumatra and Ethiopian
Expedition Joe Coffee Company, and the specialty coffee world in general, uses Arabica coffee beans. The Arabica variety of coffee is a bush, not a tree, and is grown at elevations over 1500 meters, in Ethiopia. Some say Arabica is the best all around coffee in the world, and why not? Coffee cultivation and tradition all began in East Africa.
As a coffee roasting company, the fun is in deciding which coffee roast profile to use when creating a new coffee blend or single origin recipe.
When we talk about the roast profile of our coffee, we are actually talking about the roasting process that the beans have undergone. Most coffee roasting equipment is fitted with a probe that measures the temperature of the beans in the drum, a probe that measures the exhaust gas, and an adjustable heat input. Specialty coffee roasters can use these three data points, along with time, to build a reliable roast profile.
