What is the best way to store coffee?

November 04, 2021

What is the best way to store coffee? It is a question we are asked a lot. Should you store your coffee beans in the refrigerator or freezer? Is it best to store coffee in its original bag or in an airtight container? Can light ruin coffee beans?

To brew the best cup of coffee at home, start with premium coffee beans and store them properly to maximize freshness and flavor. But again, what is the best way to store coffee beans properly?

You are here, so you have the premium coffee beans part of the equation covered; because Expedition Joe Coffee beans are roasted in small batches using only select grade, premium coffee beans.

Coffee beans’ greatest enemies are air, moisture, heat, and light. According to the National Coffee Association, in order to preserve your coffee beans’ fresh roasted flavor as long as possible, store them at room temperature in an opaque, air-tight container.

While there are different views on whether or not coffee should be frozen or refrigerated, the main consideration is that coffee absorbs moisture – and odors, and tastes – from the air around it, since it is hygroscopic, meaning it readily takes up and retains moisture.

Most home storage containers still let in small amounts of oxygen, which is why coffee beans stored a long time in the freezer can suffer freezer burn. Therefore, if you do refrigerate or freeze your beans, be sure to use a truly airtight container.

Here at Expedition Joe, we think coffee beans are beautiful and should be seen, but avoid clear canisters which will allow light to compromise the taste of your coffee. Store your beans in a dark and cool location.

We recommend Airscape products as a great way to store coffee. The original Airscape® stainless steel coffee and food storage canisters have patented lids that actively removes and locks out air to preserve and protect the freshness and flavor of coffee.
